I cannot find any record of Harvey or Clara’s deaths.

Fourth Generation

John H. CURRIE was born on November 11, 1854 in Litchfield, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada. There are conflicting dates of birth when looking at the various documents:

1871 census says 1854
1881 census says 1855
1901 census says 1845 (maybe it was just reversed?)
1921 census say 1855
Death record says 1851

I’ve settled on 1854 since it’s about the average.
John H. Currie appeared in the census of 1871 in Thorne’s Cove, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, age 17, as one of the sons of Hannah Currie, widow.

John H. CURRIE married Charlotte OWENS about 1874 in Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Charlotte OWENS was born on 6 Dec 1847 in Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada. She died between 1901 and 1907 (no record found) at the age of about 54 in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada.
John H. CURRY and Charlotte OWENS had the following children:

  • Mary E. CURRY was born in 1874 in Thorne’s Cove, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • John Frederick CURRIE was born on 15 Feb 1876 in Karsdale, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • George R. CURRY was born on 10 Mar 1881 in Thorne’s Cove, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • Harvey Truman CURRIE, born 24 Feb 1888, Thorne’s Cove, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada.

By the 1881 census, John H. Currie and Charlotte have 3 children, and are living in Thorne’s Cove, Annapolis, Nova Scotia. The household consisted of John & wife Charlotte with children Charles A., Mary and John F.

John appeared in the census in 1891 in Lower Granville, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada. The household consisted of John & Charlotte with Mary, John, George R., and Harvey.

John and Charlotte appeared in the census in 1901 in Lower Granville, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada. His occupation was ‘Mariner’.

On the top of the next page two children are listed, George and Harvey.

After the death of his wife, Charlotte, John married Bessie J. Owens on December 23, 1907. Notice that John’s parents are listed as ‘Homestead and Hannah’

John appeared in the census in 1911 in Delaps Cove Polling District, Annapolis, Nova Scotia. John and ____? Can’t read his wife’s name. It should be Bessie. Looks like it might say Jane, which could be Bessie’s middle name since the marriage record shows her as Bessie J. Owens.

John died on 24 Jun 1926 at the age of 71 in Thorne’s Cove, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is buried in Port Wade.
Death record shows his parents as John Currie and Hannah Stevenson. This is the only place where Hannah’s maiden name is revealed. The person making the death report was his son Harvey. Not sure why he said his father’s father’s name was ‘John’ when it should have been ‘Homestead’.

This is full size, sorry for the blurriness!

Fifth Generation

Homestead CURRY was born in United States. Birth place ‘USA’ was given on marriage record of his son, John as well
as on the death record of his son John.
His wife Hannah STEVENSON was born in 1821 in Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada. She appeared in the census in 1871 in
Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada. widowed, labourer. Sons John and William Henry.

Homestead CURRY and Hannah STEVENSON had the following children:

  • John H. CURRY, born 11 Nov 1854, Litchfield, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada; died 24 Jun 1926,
Thorne’s Cove, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • William Henry CURRY was born in 1852 in Thorne’s Cove, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada. He
appeared in the census in 1911 in Thorne’s Cove, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada. He died on 11 Feb
1916 at the age of 64 in Nictaux, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, Canada.

I have made a thorough search for ‘Homestead Currie/Curry’ both in the USA and Canada records without success. The only documentation that shows his name are on the marriage and/or death records of his two known children., John H., and William Henry Currie.

An interesting thing I came across in my search was the marriage records in Annapolis of two women with the surname ‘Homestead’.

One was Elizabeth Homestead of Granville Ferry who married James W. Brothers also of Granville Ferry in 1878 at the African Baptist church. Unfortunately, neither of them filled in their parents’ names on this document.

However, later, James Brothers and Elizabeth ‘Homestead’ had a daughter named Annie Brothers. When Annie married Almond Parker in 1925, she gave her mother’s name as Elizabeth Curry instead of Elizabeth Homestead. This makes me think that Homestead was actually your great great grandfather’s surname. Or , possibly, that his owner called him by a single name, without a surname, and later, when he needed to start filling out legal documents, he was given, or chose for himself, the surname ‘Curry’.

I found Elizabeth (Homestead) Brothers in the census of 1881 where she is listed as age 27 which would make her born about 1854. So, she’s born around the same time as Homestead and Hannah’s two sons, William Henry Currie, born 1852, and John H. Currie (your great grandfather), born 1854.

I also found Elizabeth’s death record which Annie provides the details for. She gives Elizabeth’s father’s surname as ‘Curry’ and her mother’s surname as ‘Homestead’.

The other one is Mary E. Homestead of Granville Ferry who married in 1879, Thomas Ervin, a sailor, also of Granville Ferry. Mary gives her parents names as ‘Harry (or Harvey) and Hannah’. Mary gives her age as 28 at the time of the marriage, which would have been born about 1851, around the same time as Elizabeth Currie (above), John H. Currie and William Henry Currie.

Thomas Ervin and Mary E. appear in the 1881 census in Granville Ferry. I guess she was going by her middle name as she is listed as Eliza. Also, she must have been trying to hide her real age when they married because she gives her age in the census as 35, which would make her 5 years older than Thomas, and born in 1846 instead of 1851. Unless of course the census taker made an error. They do not have any children at the time of this census, but there is a young man age 17 living with them named John Moses. I haven’t been able to find any trace of them after 1881. They just disappear!
